In my view, one of the best qualities of the EU is that democracies in need have always been able to be stabilized quickly. In Spain 1984 it was not clear whether King Juan Carlos could preserve a democracy. The EU quickly absorbed Spain and was able to help fend off a new military junta. Here, too, we should primarily value the political intention and only then the economic challenges.
