The problem in Taiwan is that after the switch to democracy in 1996, the island's industrial development has basically stalled and it fell into a long period of stagnation. In the last 30 years, Taiwan failed to foster any new industries. All the existing ones were actually incubated and developed in the era of the KMT dictatorship, including the semiconductor fabrication industry which was a result of Chiang Ching Kuo's push for tech ascendence in the 1980s. Most of the island's infrastructures were also built during the KMT's dictatorship, that's why they look so rundown and out of date today. Most of Taiwanese can't afford cars and they all ride motorcycles, which create a spectacular street view of motorcycle tsunami in the rush hours (search "Taiwan motorcycle tsunami" if you want), reminiscent of the same street views of Vietnam and Cambodia. Those are definitely not a typical view of a developed and prosperous society. The island does have a car brand Luxgen, but it doesn't have good proprietary IPs on cars so the brand has minimal recognition in the market. It claimed bankrupcy in mainland China 4 years ago due to annual sales of only 200 units a year, lol. In the mainland, car ownership rates are already quite impressive in the rural countryside but the Taiwanese are still riding motorcycles.(You can watch the drive tour of mainland Chinese and Taiwanese cities respectively and compare).
