Considering the Vietnamese population is twice that of South Korea, you would need the tech strength double that of South Korea to become a developed nation comparable to South Korea, which means Vietnam would need two Samsungs, two Hyundais, two LGs, two SK Hynixes and twice the ship-building tech strength and capacities of South Korea.... This is indeed incredibly difficult considering the global market is already dominated by powerful tech players in existence, unless your tech strength can grow strong enough to outcompete them and eat their market shares.

China has caught up in industries with South Korea and now becomes the biggest competitor to South Korea in all industries. The future for South Korea is gloomy as China has the tremendous domestic market South Korea doesn't have. and South Korea deeply relies on the Chinese market in the past 30 years. South Korea even lodged a trade deficit with China recently (the first turn of pages in 30 years) which was a very dangerous signal to South Korea. Thanks to the tightened US sanctions on China, South Korea had some sort of temporary relief but China has been expediting technological leaps even under severe US sanctions, according to Korean media reports in the last few days, the "last bastion" of South Korea, the memory chips (DRAM and NAND) have been busted by China, after China overtook South Korea in LCD/OLED display panel technologies (South Korea was forced to give up LCD due to Chinese competitions), shipbuilding technologies (South Korea cannot build large cruising liners but China has built one and is immediately building the second one) , automobiles especially in the EV..... even in animation and gaming technologies, China has surpassed South Korea, the only strong spot South Korea still has against China is: 1. chip fab beyond 7nm (as South Korea can access EUV lithograpy machines but China is sanctioned and cannot access EUV), 2. Entertainment and music (Even in music and movie industries, China is progressing fast). There is a huge crisis looming on for South Korea as it cannot compete with China in more and more industries. You cannot blame South Korea though, because it is China who is progressing too fast.

You are right in listing some of the main factors for explaining the disappointing performance of the Filipino economy in the past decades. I'd like to add another one, which is the land cost. The lands in the Philippines are privately owned and it's difficult to acquire them for industrial uses without paying a lot of money. In Vietnam, the govt can acquire lands easily and make them readily available for industrial parks and factory uses.

@francisyu2790 look at US's fear and hysteria against China, don't just look at China itself, look at the US and the West's reactions, you will realize one thing or two hopefully.

Taiwan is still a third world developing island, don't be fooled by their highly inflated GDP per capita figure. Look at the real life in their society, Taipei, the capital, is still dominated by motorcycle tsunami in the streets. Most of Taiwanese cannot afford cars. Their cities look so rundown and dilapidated, it doesn't feel anything associated with an advanced society at all. You also cannot feel hi-tech looking at Taiwan streets, most of the store names are just a piece of plastic board painted with store names, there are no design or aesthetic concepts or whatsoever.

your so-called ghost cities in China are now burstling with substantial influx of residents and torrents of cars with very busy scenes, how long have you not checked back how the so-called ghost cities 10 years ago are doing now? For example, the Tianducheng in Hangzhou have now multiple subway lines serving the area due to the influx of population and the property prices of Tianducheng are now off the roof (10-15 years ago, there were no subway lines in the area and no infrastructures in the vincinity but 15 years later, the area has been swallowed by the rapidly expanding Hangzhou city and multiple subway lines have already been operating there); the Kangbashi in Orodos, Inner Mongolia are also now very busy with residents and cars, you can check how it looks like in 2024 as well.

@yanglee1404 Not me but South Korean media are saying China has surpassed South Korea in all technologies except chip fab beyond 7nm these days. I can tell you straight away the news source: Both YTN and Korean Business TV News reported China surpassed South Korea in overall technologies on October 16, 2024, which is 5 days ago. You can search them if you are not convinced. The Chosun Ilbo also reported two weeks ago that Korean businesses owners in China said China had overtaken their home country in all fields except chip fab beyond 7nm in the lastest industrial survey organized by the Korean govt. You can search that news too. Last year, Joong Ang Ilbo and Dong A Ilbo also reported about the Reversal of Technological Prowess of China and South Korea 30 years after Diplomatic Establishment, you can search the news archives as well.

China looks cyberpunk and futuristic but Taiwan looks as if it is still stuck in the 1990s with all the old buildings and rundown streets and old-fashioned feel overall. Just look at the motorcycle tsunami in Taipei streets (they call it "motorcycle waterfall" you can search it on youtube to watch the flabbergasting scene), most of Taiwanese cannot afford cars, so EVERYBODY FLOODS THE STREETS WITH MOTORCYCLES, making Taiwan streets look quite Southeast Asian as Vietnamese and Cambodian and other Southeast Asian street scenes are also typically dominated by the torrents of motorcycles. In other words, Taiwan is falling far far behind China in modernization drives.

You can check those out first in Nature's official website to see how many Chinese science institutes are in the top 10, top 20 and top 50 before you tell me China's science research status. Ever heard of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), an IP arm under the UN? You can check their 2023 Intellectual Property Report and see China's patent volumes (especially China's patent volumes in comparison to America's) and then you can reply to me about China's application status of science and technology.
