So... I'm white as hell! 😜 But... I have a mixed race son. Now, his dad is usually working when he is in school and can't really go to a lot of his school events bc of this. This one time he actually had a day off to go to a school event when our son was in the 2nd grade. We show up there, head past the office and into the hallway where our sons class is already lining up. We both spot him, start waving and see him all excited to see his dad with me. It was super cute, until...
One of the office staff spot us and asks him to come see her real quick. Now... She tells me I can go on through, but I get this bad feeling and decide to go in with him.... And I'm glad I did... Cuz this crazy lady proceeds to tell him he is "going to have to come back another day because your hairstyle does not meet our dress code standard, and we wouldn't want to give the children a bad impression.". His "hairstyle" was long, well kept dreadlocks.
Now... I will say, his reaction was the mature and correct one.... Mine... Not so much... But it got the job done.
So at first I'm not mad so much as I am flabbergasted as to what came out of this crazy lady's mouth... but I can tell he's mad. Despite this, he takes a breath, turns to me and says, "Come on. I'm not getting into this with these people here.".... unfortunately for them as soon as he got done saying that, my "pissed-off" just kicked right in.
First thing outta my mouth was, "The F*** you say!" Which... again... I understand was very inappropriate for the setting... At which point this lady starts looking at me like I'm the crazy one while he is trying to take me by the hand to Lead Me Out.... but I am past the point, at that point. Whatever point there was I was f**** past it.
So I'm going off.
"What the hell is wrong with his hair anyways?"
"And if you haven't noticed he is both black and a grown ass man, so what f*** are you putting negative connotations on his damn hair!"
" Why don't you worry about your own Grandma looking hair!"
Again... Not my most shining moment of maturity... but it is what it is... And no one messes with my boys!
Somewhere in there I mentioned that he finally got a day off where "he got to go to one of his school events and now he can't go in there because you don't like the way his hair looks".
Around that time the vice principal came in and basically just told us it was fine as long as I shut the hell up but didn't in nicer terms. 😂
When she said that, he said, Okay. Yes ma'am." and then pulled me out of the office.... My stupid ass talking about, "That's what I f*** thought!" all the way out. 😂
BUT... I did manage to return myself to a calm demeanor and put a smile on my face before I rounded the corner again to see my child at the other end of the hallway.
Anywho... That was probably not my most shining moment... But... I will say... In almost any other setting, it would have been more then appropriate for that level of racial ignorance.
And... AND... They actually sent a letter requesting that his DAD be the one to come to the rest of the school events for the year! 😂 And... Ya know... Not me! 😂 So... It kinda worked!
