@assertivekarma1909 some attempted and successful wideouts, unfortunately. I am the first to wax patriotic about my country, but let's not whitewash history.

Relatively free markets and meritocaracy based on disinterested approaches to empirical reality - most of all. Without the Enlightenment informing our government and civic life, none f these natural advantages would have been utilized effectively. Small countries like England and Holland and Portugal and Rome have punched way above their weight at different times based on cultural characteristics. They had to do it through empire away from their home naitons, whereas ours was within our country, which is an advantage, but culture is more important.
