"and Cornel West in the general.": " Problem: most states in the US are winner takes all, so your vote will be erased by the electoral college. Also, there can never be more than two parties competing in a system like in the US. What you would need to do is get rid of the electoral college and replace it with popular vote. That also solves the problem with the winner takes all system. And then you'd have to create a system where more than two parties will be represented in congress and get rid of big money initiatives such as citizens united.
