We didn't know about Kim Jong Un, either, until he ascended the "throne". Before that he was studying in Switzerland while hiding in plain sight as just a regular South Korean exchange student just like his sister 3 years later. None of us knew who they really were.

Yours is a very western world view. In Korean tradition (both North and South) both partners keep their maiden name. Surname changing is not as common in the South East as it is elsewhere. Besides, Kim is one of the most common surnames in all of Korea. There is a high chance her future husband will already have the same surname as her, so it wouldn't really matter.

Why does it matter? Jong un would just have him offed, just like he had his father...

@BlueVoltageBlader @BlueVoltageBlader : Yes, his sister (the lady on the right in the thumbnail) was hiding in Switzerland as well. Now whenever Kim Jong-Un is unable to represent NK, she takes over temporarily. Remember when Jong-Un had heart issues? She was leading the gov't.

I agree. The fact that the young girl is part of the public's perspective now is nothing except a pr stunt by Kim Jong Un. It's his way of pretenting to care for his family, which is supposed to be a metophor for his care of the North Korean people in general.

@neymar6756 @neymar : Because that happened before. Kim Jong Un was just a random Korean exchange student living and studying in Switzerland. Before his father died, nobody knew who he really was. Blending in with the average Korean Joe and Jane is a safety measure for the North Korean elite to keep their offspring safe until they are fit (as educated adults) to take over in case of the death of the current leader.
