I think they mostly appeal to younger students. It's more easier to indoctrinate them because 1) they probably don't commute, so they don't quite understand the problems they're causing, and 2) it's easier to convince younger people that the solution is to be outraged instead of focusing on what might be the problem. None of these people know of a solution other than for it to stop and politicians are using it as a motive to increase taxes on energy and cars.
