  1. I am quite perplexed to see how most people believe that medieval Italian history is only wealth and art, without even suspecting the military power achieved by the city states and lordships. And we are not even talking about quality, but also about the size of the armies. I admit that it is a difficult paradox and that most people just don't connect the socio-political dots, but it is clear that there is something that has gone seriously wrong in the western historiography of the last generations and we are not even aware of the pile of gold on which we sit
