I will go even further than "Dark Forest Theory" and say that nomatter what, any sentient species should try eradicate everything it could to reserve as much resources as possible to itself. I mean, why should even try to contact with someone? Just nuke it from orbit, so once this planet could be colonized by your species. Maybe you could be curious if you find your first competitor, and you'll spend some time to investigate about it, but after 1000 times of genocide you'll just drop nukes as soon as you meet someone else. And once you find (or rather they find you) more advanced civilization, well, you're dead. I guess, it should encourage technological advancement))
