If wasn't for poltical and propaganda purposes, then Ukraine would retreat from Bakhmut to their more fortified, more strategic positions and let the Wagner metaphorically run into a wall over and over.

It's political. Ukraines are there to deny Russia's desperation for a win after months of retreats, and they don't want any loss to give Germany justification for their appeasement of Putin.

@nyw100 What you are saying is we can't trust the Russian government to be truthful and Putin's handpicked cronies are incredibly corrupt. I agree 100%.

@WinterXR7 Propaganda and politics. Putin is desperate to declare a victory after months of retreating, and Germany is looking any small Ukrainian loss to justify their appeasement of Putin. Ukraine has to hold the city to prevent those narratives.
