  1. Putin has always had some impressively smart economists working for him. I imagine Russia could have been a global economic player if these bureaucrats had the goal of growing the economy instead of withstanding sanctions and concentrating wealth in the hands of Putin's friends and family.

  2.  @bachelor3846  Your examples of Spain, South Korea, and China are because they were closed economies that opened up to trade. Just look at what is happening to China as president Pooh cracks down on industries for his own poltical ambition instead of economic interests. Without the protection of the rule of law, foreign investors are fleeing the country and China is on the verge of a recession. Autocracies create poor economic conditions.
