Putin doesn't need a real win. He needs to end this soon before the Russian casualties and economic downturn threaten his power base. All Putin needs is an "achievement" even if it is meaningless one to justify a claim of victory in domestic propaganda. Russia and China do whatever they want due to decades of Western inaction, but this war may make them finally think twice.

@liamr194 Self sufficient? Then explain why your currency has more use as toilet paper than as money? Let's see how much Putin cares about "strategic objectives" when thousands of Russian soldiers come home with missing limbs or in coffins. Even before the information age, the Soviet Union couldn't hide all the casualties and had to pull out of Afghanistan due to public outrage. These returning soldiers won't be returning with stories of fighting Nazi, but instead tell of fellow Slavs fighting for their freedom. The longer this takes, the less effective Putin's hold of the narrative will last.

@liamr194 What you were saying was true until before Russia's foreign reserves were frozen. They don't have the money to just wait it out. Even with prices going up, Russia is heavily discounting their gas to prevent European diversification (they can't go cold turkey even if wanted to). The country also can't get investments or loans (interest rates are now 20%). Even buying or paying for anything is going to be a more expensive task. If this doesn't look bad, then you aren't paying attention. Syrian mercenaries aren't going to be effective soldiers.

@liamr194 60% is huge! In addition, the ruble reserves are worthless, while the yen and crypto aren't trusted enough as an exchange currency. For example, Israel companies aren't going to accept the ruble or yen as payments for software. China also doesn't give money for ideology reasons. They give money to North Korea to prevent a refugee crisis and they give Venezuela loans in exchange for free gas. The country is very transactional, so Russia won't get anything from China without huge Russian concessions. They are calling foreign fighter because they don't have enough troops and they can't bring more from Russia without signaling to the public that the war isn't going well as they claim. The foreign fighters won't be on the front line. They will protect supply lines and depots to free up Russian soldiers to fight on the front line.
