@baronvonjo1929 Young professionals pay big taxes to support people who retire as early as 55. The taboo is to increase the retirement age to anything close to the EU average.

They should leave the Euro. A weaker currency will increase tourism and exports.

@theprofessional1375 The retired take money from the tax system, while contributing nothing in taxes which is a key reason why Greece's ridiculously low retirement age lead to an economic collapse. Also, a year of unemployment is way too long. Maybe the government would have more money to stimulate the economy or for social services if they weren't spending so much on paying people not to work. Greece's main problem is the population doesn't want to work or pay taxes.

@theprofessional1375 The economic crisis was caused by voter backed-laziness. The government budget was too big because pensions kept leaving the work force earlier and earlier, while asking for more and more benefits. In addition to less workers (& taxpayers), there was massive tax avoidance in Greece by the working age population. The world felt zero pity for Greece causing Greek problems.

@badseed86 That doesn't make sense as the majority of America's economic activity is from small businesses, but the businesses are taxed through personal income taxes and payroll taxes. Greeks just didn't want to pay taxes, so they never made easy reforms.

@sarantis1995 Whose citizens vote for the Greek government with bad economic policies? I would disagree with your argument that the Greeks were too stupid to understand that massive speading, low workforce participation, and tax avoidance wasn't going to cause unstainable budget deficits that had to be dealt with decades later.

@badseed86 I said the majority of American businesses are small, so you fact about the self employed is irrelevant to my statement. You can try to make this into an irrelevant, xenophobic thing about religion, but the facts are that Greeks expect high benefits, retire incredibly early, and refuse to enforce tax compliance. They ran their economy into the ground, and then blamed everyone else including the ones who bailed them out. Fwi: I'm not even protestant.
