To move up in the Communist Party, regional officials have to show economic growth in their region. These officials discovered that it is easier to just lie about economic growth instead of creating growth. Of course, they can easily do this because corruption is normalized and criticism of the CPP is outlawed.

@joshzhang7041 Even your central government claims their GDP numbers are based on lies as they assume the numbers given to them by regional governments to be partially falsified and the central government make adjustments to their data to partially correct these falsehoods. Many economists find pollution levels to be a more accurate indicator of economic activity than what the Communists tell us.
