It depends what part of Europe you live in. Western Europeans like France see America as an unreliable partner and would prefer a EU army. Meanwhile, Eastern Europeans see Western Europe as unreliable and prefer American leadership.

@EllieD.Violet That attitude is why Poland and the Baltics question the reliability of Western Europe when it comes to supporting them during an attack by Russia. You sound like you would give Estonia and parts of Poland to Russia if it met cheaper energy prices and avoiding your Article V obligations.

Americans died fighting for the democracy of people who don't respect democracy. Obviously, we would defend our democratic brothers. Why the distrust?

France protectionism would destroy any structure. If tanks aren't made in France, then France vetos. If jets aren't made in France, then France vetos. If ships aren't made in France, then France vetos.

What makes a country "European"? I would argue America has more in common with Europe as a whole than Europeans have with other Europeans.

@yoannbelleville7763 We all know that European "strategic autonomy" is coward nations looking for an exit ramp for their Article V obligations. Even when the US is protecting European ships from attacks in the Red Sea, only Greece and Britain have actually committed to joining the operation with ships. It not America's fault that so many European choose ti be freeloaders off of American provided security.

@alm9322 Macron is just trying to get Europe to buy French weapons instead of American weapons. If Macron actually cared about European security, then he wouldn't be trying to alienate the US and appease Putin.

@Blabla-od7vt The Baltic countries and Poland don't trust France and Germany. Western Europe have been practically forced, kicking and screaming, into giving aid to Ukraine and they have been shamed for pushing appeasement with Putin. Eastern Europe has doubled down on American and British leadership.

@kkrolik2106 No, they don't. Putin has never kept a promise or honored a treaty. Even Russia's "allies" don't trust Putin.

@jean-philippebobin3732 France vetoed the EU from buying artillery shells from outside of the EU for Ukraine because they cared more about profit than Ukraine's defense. Let's also not forget how French protectionism has sank every EU trade deal. Macron only wants an EU army so he can pressure European nations to buy inferior French weapons instead of advanced American weapons.
