General Winter
15
After Stalin's Great Purge and the failed Soviet invasion of Finland, there probably wasn't a better time to destroy their ideological rival. In hindsight, we know the gamble didn't pay off. The Germans could have also done better if Hitler would stop ignoring his Generals.

@ignitionfrn2223 it's not like the Soviets were an unstoppable force. They couldn't even beat Finland....in the Winter.

@pyromania1018 & I'm arguing

@freelancenerd4804 True, but the Soviet Union was only going to get more dangerous if given time to consolidate and rebuild their officer core. It was inevitable for the Nazis and Soviets to face off.

@adamhbrennan Germany/Japan together may have been able to face of against the Soviet Union or the United States, but clearly not at the same time. Don't forget that the US almost singlehandedly defeated Japan, while concentrating their forces in Europe and Northern Africa against the Germans and Italians.

The weather is overemphasized. Both Napoleon and Hitler's issue's were a lack of planning and not just the temperature. Invading Russia without enough food or cold weather gear is like invading a desert country without enough water.

It worked out for the Mongols.

What about Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn?

I can't wait for coverage of the Nazi/Soviet invasion of Poland!

It worked for the Mongols.

@executivedirector7467 It is generous to call it a Pyrrhic Victory.

@executivedirector7467 There really isn't "winning" in war. There is a question of achieving your objectives at an acceptable cost. Stalin's original objective was to re-annex Finland, but he to settle for some territory on the border at the cost of huge Soviet causalities. Finland's main objective was to retain their sovereignty, so losing some territory was probably an acceptable loss for them.

The blitzkrieg on bicycles.

@VeteranR They said the same thing about the invasion of France.
1
@VeteranR That's assuming that the Soviets would want to fight forever and not surrender after significant loses. Germany for example surrendered in WW1 even though foreign troops never even made it into Germany.
