I understand from a national security point of view, but the economy argument is foolish. For example, cutting off oil from Russia to avoid them having the ability to exercise influence on our economy makes sense. Meanwhile, banning oil from Canada wouldn't make sense as there is no danger of Canada using economic blackmail against their brother nation. Trump's tariff policy is neither targeted towards important sectors and its planned against our allies.

@johnmeyers6703 Tarrifs and other trade barriers hurt consumers overall. That is why trade barriers for economic purposes are foolish while trade barriers for national security are sensible. An example would be Chinese steel. It is the cheapest stuff on the market, so it can make American construction more cost efficient. On the other end, US tank producers should only buy American made steel even though it will cost more because that cost is worth paying to keep Chinese influence out of weapons production.

@johnmeyers6703 National security costs money. Why do you think so much money is paid to police, intelligence, and the military? You could argue they are expensive, but protecting national security is worth the cost. Meanwhile, tariffs to improve economic conditions, but actually hurt economic conditions, aren't worth the cost. Plus, China has a very closed economy already. Capital controls, restrictions on investments, protectionism, and straight ban on foreign technologies.

@glennjanot8128 Voters would prefer candidates who fight back with counter tariffs than cave to American coercion. Meanwhile, autocrats know they can outlast Trump in a trade war.

@robertp457 The US government cares way more about voters than tax revenue. Otherwise, every administration wouldn't be so fiscally irresponsible.

@johnmeyers6703 It's called near-shoring. America has already been moving supply chains to America, India, Mexico, and other more trustworthy nations than China.
