20% of the global economy, 2nd biggest exporter, unparalleled military power, and dominance of important sectors like technology and finance -- there isn't an economy that could replace the US dollar

Protectionism means lower quality products at a higher price.

The US is actually a huge manufacturer. We just tend to make high value-added products with a few white collar workers and a lot of automation.

Intellectual property theft and dumping to drive competitors out of business isn't good economics. The West was just too weak willed to stand against China's unfair trade practices until it was too late.

@Lewd_Fox Every step in the supply chain is value adding. For example, getting iron ore from the ground gets a cheap commodity. Turning that iron ore into steel adds value. Turning that steel into an automobile adds value. American manufacturing doesn't make a lot of cheap crap that requires unskilled labor, like what is commonly made in China. US manufacturing is now dominated by college graduates (white collar) using advanced technology to make high-end goods like medical equipment, cars, air planes, and highly specialized technology.

That is like saying the government shouldn't have subsidized developing fracking technology and just have the government pay more for natural gas.

The issue is that China cheats with intellectual property theft, dumping, and currency manipulation. The West should continue to decouple from China until the Communist actually follow the WTO rules.

Chinese dumping and intellectual property theft have long-term consequences for the West that won't go away because of China's economic troubles.

@Lewd_Fox You obviously have very little understanding of supply chains, value adding industries, and American manufacturing. It is okay that low skilled workers in China make cheap parts and low skilled workers in India make cheap medical ingredients. The high-skilled, complex steps of the manufacturing process take place in America. This step adds the most value, creates the most profit, and demand the highest salaries.

@Lewd_Fox Also, the cheap gloves and over the counter medicines in India isn't where the money is. America companies make things like MRIs and advance prescriptions.
