As an American, I'm all for the UK subsidizing American companies.

@jamm8284 The other way around. China national, but mostly local, governments pay huge subsidies to have manufacturers set up in China.

@jamm8284 I have a feeling you don't know how subsidies work.

@jamm8284 If you give a homeless person a sandwich, then that person will have more money to buy crack instead of food. Therefore, you bought crack for the homeless. Same logic.

@jamm8284 It's a stretch to claim that Apple is giving US subsidies to manufacture in China because California pays to set up massive headquarters in the Bay Area to work on engineering and marketing.

@johnsmith1474 It's a joke. Keep your prejudices to yourself.

@Phantom-mk4kp As long companies are paying taxes and the government maintains regulatory authority, the government already has something akin to equity.

@GaryGoals If I were British or Australian, would the context of my statement change? Would it still sound like a self-serving joke if I was a citizen of a country that didn't benefit from the subsidies? Do your prejudices override your ability to do critical thinking?

@Phantom-mk4kp Explain the value of equity in an unprofitable business that the government won't let be sold for parts? Is it about influence? The government already has an influence with the tax code and regulations.

@jamm8284 The US government is paying Apple to set up businesses in China? It is a stretch that the US government pays Apple a tax reduction for building an Apple store in the US, but calling that a subsidy to China is nonsensical.
