@Longshanks1690 The Mongols ruled Moscow and Crimea for over a century. Maybe Russia should succeed those territories to Mongolia. History justifies it.

@Longshanks1690 My point is that these historical claims are stupid and arbitrary. Russia and everyone else recognized Crimea as part of Ukraine decades ago. Now that Russia wants more territory, they decided take the land from Ukraine, and then use a historical pretext to justify it after the fact. Also, you can't deport all the non-Russians and then call it a Russian territory. That is the kinda stuff the Nazis did after expelling Slavs.

@hobofactory The people of the Sudetenland were also happy with the the annexation into Germany after the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia. The Nazis created this support by flaming nationalist sentiments with propaganda in the local language. In addition to local support, the Nazis used historical ties to the region to justify annexing the territory after the invasion. If this sounds familiar, then it is because it parallels what Russia keeps doing in every country with Russian speakers.

With the exception of Palestine, Ukraine is only the country that had its territory stolen by military means within the 21st century. This makes the situation in Crimea much more unique then it was decades ago.

He trying to use a comparable example of German expansion (Russia's boogeyman) with the same logic Russia used to steal land from Ukraine to show the absurdity of Russia's justification. A more comparable example would be the Nazis invasion of Czechoslovakia inorder to annex the Sudetenland. The Sudetenland was a prosperous German-speaking region that the Nazis wanted to annex for it's resources and industrial capacity. Thanks to German propaganda, the local population also wanted to leave Czechoslovakia for Germany. In addition to local support, the Nazis used historical ties to the region to justify annexing the territory after an invasion. If this sounds familiar, then it is because it parallels what Russia keeps doing with every territory with Russian speakers.

@tash4943 What are you talking about? What is unhealthy about stability from the the prevention of military's fighting over territory? Also, populations move all the time without the need for border changes. Just look at all the diasporas across the EU that can prosper in other countries without their home country annexing their new home. I also don't think Russia's justification for the military subjugation of their neighbors should be "Well, it is in the best interests of Russia."

@ivarkich1543 You forgot to mention that voters weren't even given the option to remain as part of Ukraine in the 2014 Referendum that Putin wrote. The only choices voters could pick between was Crimea autonomy or joining Russia.

@DerDop I'm bothered by the imperialism, because they invading their smaller neighbors. I do find it odd about how many Russians think their country is still a superpower, while also justifing their aggression by claiming that they are the helpless victims to more powerful foes (like Ukraine?). It's an interesting dichotomy.

Stalin killed between 20 to 60 million citizens of his own country. Those definitely weren't the glory days.

That doesn't make any sense. Countries can have military bases in other countries. Just look at the hundreds of military bases the United States has around the world. Russia also has a military base in Syria without governing Syria.

@orson_krennic831 Are you high? How was NATO going to take a base occupied by the Russian navy? Did anyone have a referendum in the Soviet Union or were all decisions made by Moscow elites? Putin wanted to expand his Russian empire, so he used his military to seize the territory. You can pretend it something else, but that is what happened.

Also, it was never on the table for Russia to leave a military base for NATO to occupy. Russia would simply refuse to leave and NATO wouldn't go to war over it.

@p_serdiuk Lumber is a commodity, so the price of lumber has doubled globally. This is a supple chain issue due to covid. Russia also doesn't need strategic borders to defend itself when they enough nukes to destroy the world.
