Turkey is the only country I can think of where the military cracks down on authoritarian populism and then restores democracy as the country stabilizes. Usually military coups just seize power and reestablish elections when they can rig it in their favor.

@divinewind6313 Erdogan had his allies in the Gülen movement purge many of the secular officers with manufacturered evidence. The same movement filled in the power vacuum within the military. Of course, Erodgan and Gülen turned on each other. Gülen's followers in the military tried to overthrow him with the world's worst plan. Using the pretext, Erodgan purged anyone who wasn't a Islamist loyal to him from the military. Turkey now has a less professional military who is more likely to commit a coup to keep Erodgan in power than force him out if he loses the election.

No country that bordered the Soviet Union was better off by being their allies.

Turkey is the only country where it worked out. I never heard of a military actually want to restore the republic after taking power. I think it is because Turkey's military was a more pro-democratic institution than the political parties or even Turkish culture.

@helloworld0609 It's different, because Thailand coups are more about retaining their power than protecting the country from chaos.

@bodoor8172 That was actually a common occurrence in Communist dictatorships
