If the people wanted hardliners, then the people would have voted hardliners into power. The Sunni/Shiite divide predated American involvement. America's failure was the naive belief they could manage the ethnic conflicts. Of course, no one is going to attack Russia. Everyone is scared of nukes. You would be braindead not to be.
