There is plenty to criticism for the Chinese oppression of the people of Tibet. However, most westerners don't know that the Tibet Theocracy was also an oppressive regime where most of the population were literally serfs. It is easy to see the Chinese as simply as the bad guy, but it more grey like how the oppressive Soviet Union's "liberation" of eastern Europe from fascist Germany. Neither side is great.

@danielsan901998 Or you just negotiate fair distribution based on international law. If you look at how China has claimed the territorial waters of other countries in the South China Sea, then it obviously you won't get much respect of international law from the Chinese.

@zeitgeistx5239 That is Chinese propaganda that doesn't even make sense if you take two seconds to think about it. The West has an issue with communism and autocracies. That is why America's decades long enemy was the Soviet Union. (Fun fact: the Soviet Union was made up of white people.) After the Soviet Union fell and democratic revolutions spread across the world, China became the last major autocracy in the world. Meanwhile, some of the US's closest friends are democracies that share our values such as Japan, Korea, and the Philippines. I guess the Chinese consider these people "white", because the West is too racist to Asians to be friends with these nations?

@Giles20 Tibet is developing economically. However, the new wealth only goes into the hands of the Han Chinese colonizers that moved into the territory. The wealth inequality is simply staggering. The state-owned corporations control all the natural resources, and Beijing has Mandarin language requirements for all high paying jobs in order to concentrate all the wealth in the hands of the Han.

@jagdpanther2224 No one is asking for a return to theocracy. Even the government in exile is elected with the Dali Lama just as a spiritual advisor. Lastly, the poor behavior of the old system hardly seems like justification for the Communists to treat the Tibetans as second class citizens.

@CannibaLouiST Which is ridiculous, because the deal expires in a few decades.

It can't be worst than the Chinese map that claims the entire South China Sea.

@unconscious1076 There are 326 Indian reservations in the United States where they govern themselves. There are reservations that are bigger than some US states. If only Tibet had the same autonomy instead of being ruled from Beijing by Han Chinese.

@mikeyorkav4039 Eastern Europe elects their own leaders and the ones that embraced economic liberation and rule of law had impressive economic growth. Meanwhile, those that embraced Russia's crony capitalism got corruption and economic stagnation.

Surprise, surprise. The Chinese are abusing their neighbors.

@zeitgeistx5239 An example of how we are stealing the natural resources of Mexico? You should have dozens of examples with your blanket statement.

The Tibetan people don't even remember the old system. Meanwhile, they see everyday how the Han Chinese steal the wealth from their homeland as the ethnic Tibetans remain in poverty. While the Tibetan people say they want freedom to rule themselves, Chinese Propaganda mischaracterizes this as them wanting to return to the old system.
1
@Giles20 According to the Chinese government who lies about GDP growth so much that economists think pollution levels are more reliable indicators of economic growth.
1
@boxerholy9507 Yet, Han Chinese hold 90% of the wealth of Tibet.
1
Maybe. The Nationalist may have caved to international pressure as trade was more important to them than ideology. Meanwhile, the Communists will let there people starve to fulfill their ideological ambitions.
1
The Communist Party won't be in power forever. A more liberal China could lead to regions like Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong having real autonomy instead of it just on paper.

@chengqianzhou7585 You are obviously deflecting to other topics, because your western "racism" propaganda is indefensible nonsense. Autocrat 101: Fake victimhood to justify oppression of others. Putin and Xi have been using that play a lot lately.
1
@chengqianzhou7585 Then what is your point?
1
@mikeyorkav4039 What are you talking about? The Communist parties lost, but stuck around. Everyone was done with the Soviet Union except the hard-core Stalinist and Kazakhstan.

@mikeyorkav4039 Communism just keeps people equally poor. Capitalism with state support in education allows upward mobility and the increase productivity raises the standard of living among all social groups. Even America's "poor" has such abundance that obesity is a problem among them. Meanwhile, China still has a peasant class who who are legally tied to their land by an oppressive regime who still praises murder of millions, Mao Zedong.

@mikeyorkav4039 There are crucial distinctions between true capitalism and crony capitalism. In the former, entrepreneurs make profits by risking their own assets to produce goods and services that they sell to willing customers. In the latter, predators use political influence to obtain special favors from government at the expense of their competitors and the taxpayers. Only a separation of economy and state will eliminate political corruption which is wrongly blamed on true capitalism. Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine have embraced crony capitalism and have faced stagnation, while Eastern European countries that have embraced EU rules that push true capitalism have flourished. All are better off than with socialism.
1
@mikeyorkav4039 That doesn't even make sense. Communist and Mercantilism systems have both exploited other nations and minorities. Just look at home the Soviet Union exploited minorities to enrich the Russian population or how the Chinese State Companies are using the Uyghurs as slave labor to enrich the Han Chinese.
