We should hear more about the Soviet crackdown on independence movements. There is a reason that ex-Soviet nations still have a poor view of Russia.

@urhunn7778 Some of argued that he was a great leader that he was able to navigate successfully the powder keg of ethnic tensions. Without him as leader, the country collapsed into civil war.

@PP266 I'm not saying he wasn't a brutal dictator. I was just pointing out that he kept the multi ethnic nation united during his lifetime.

@lati long I think the resentment of Russia treating the countries in the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact as colonies and vassal states was pretty universal among Eastern Europe. However, the oppression was different in each region.

@doggo5577 Even Belarus doesn't look fondly on Russia.

Nationalism isn't bad until it is used as a justification to oppress others.

Putin enters the chat

Russian nationalism was a more useful tool for Stalin to centralize his control than for him to embrace his Georgia roots.

@ryhanzfx1641 Yes, the video painted the independence movements with a broad stroke instead of covering it country by country.

@SHAHIDKC During the cold war in Latin America, America's priority wasn't spreading democracy. It was stopping communism. Democracy and human rights weren't really a priority until after the Cold War.

@ibrahimyilmaz4861 Then explain the US support for Isreal - the only country in the middle east without oil. If Isreal wasn't a functioning democracy, then the US would have sided with the greater Muslim world for the economic benefits.

@ibrahimyilmaz4861 President Truman didn't want to side with Isreal, because it would have alienated his anti Communist allies in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iran (different times). He got presured into it by public support for the one middle east democracy. America's support for democracies isn't just a moral argument, but a strategic one. Democracies are more likely to be allies and be less corrupt trade partners. Just look at the former Soviet republics. Those who remained autocracies are aligned with Russia, while those who embraced Democracy and Rule of Law are aligned with the EU/America.

@ibrahimyilmaz4861 To a degree. Realpolitik will sometimes will be too much of an obstacle. However, this doesn't mean that democracy and human rights isn't a goal. There are also many times where pushing for a moral policy is against American interests. For example, America will never get a security deal with the Taliban, because they keep insisting that the Taliban should grant women rights.

@terrorgaming459 It depends. Fascist patriots committed some of the worst crimes in human history.

Nationalism can be both good and bad. German nationalism was used by the Nazi to justify numerous crimes. However, German nationalism also encouraged West Germans to economically support their poorer East German brothers.

@mitchyoung93 They voted for the guy offering stability. Belarusians do not look fondly at Russia taking away their sovereignty, and that is why Putin's puppet is keeping the secret police so busy.

@ibrahimyilmaz4861 It depends on the leaders. Bush was more ideological and thought that turning Afghanistan into a republic would benefit the Afghanistan people like what happened to Korea, Japan, Germany, and the Philippines. It was naive of him to think it would be easy to turn a tribal society to a functional democracy in a few years. On the other hand, President Trump and Biden both could care less about Afghanistan and its people.
