Except the FDA is banning things based on politics instead of science. The harmful part of cigarettes isn't the menthol, so going after menthol doesn't make sense unless you want further police African Americans.

@justpotato2042 That is a theory that has not been proven with science. In fact, for this ban, the FDA plans to run further studies, because the previous one didn't give them the results they wanted.

The harm of nicotine without the tar is not understood, because vaping is still relatively new. I assume it is unhealthy as red meat, but we won't know about the long term effects for some time.

@alan_clough I'm skeptical about any reports about the long term effects until actual studies can be concluded.

Menthol sales actually went up in bordering states more than they dropped in Massachusetts. The only effect was which states got the tax revenue.

Philip Morris actually has started investing in pharmaceuticals.

Race is a social construct. If people believe Hispanics are a race, then they are a race. Also, the further harm to minorities is attributed to access to healthcare instead of genetics.

@firstlast-em2yq Gender is also a social construct where society assigns non-biological to women and behavior and identity is effected by those beliefs. It has actually be shown through unethical studies that if you tell kids they aren't as smart, then their performance will drop. Biologically, there is practically zero difference between races. Most differences are social, cultural, or environmental. For example, are black people more sensitive to lung cancer or does the group just smoke more cigarettes?

@firstlast-em2yq Sex is a biological fact that is universal to all humans. Gender is a social construct mostly assigned by sex, but has different meanings based on culture. Men can't have babies is a biological fact. Whether men wear skirts depends on what culture you a part of. You agree that race has no definition based on biology, then why don't you believe that Hispanics can also arbitrarily be defined as a race?

@firstlast-em2yq If Hispanics identify themselves as a race and everyone else in society identities them as a race, then Hispanics are a race. It really doesn't matter how you personally feel.

@米空軍パイロット Switching from methol cigarettes to regular cigarettes doesn't improve health. The methol isn't the harmful part. The ACLU is also concerned that Biden's ban on menthol cigarettes and other tobacco products would "foster an underground market" that would disproportionately harm people of color due to over-policing. Just look at Eric Garner, who died when an officer held him in a chokehold after he allegedly sold cigarettes outside a convenience store. A methol ban is going to increase cases like Garner's as an underground methol market is just going to give the police more excuses to harass African Americans.

@PeugeotRocket What confuses me is that there are conservatives who want to ban THC and regulate nicotine, and there are liberals who want to ban nicotine and regulate THC. Both sides are hypocrites.
