Uno reverse. France has vetoed a US-EU free trade deal for three decades.

@pranshukrishna5105 Not their special interests groups such as car manufacturers, wine producers, and farmers.

@pranshukrishna5105 France would rather keep California wines out of Europe than sell more French wine in America, and French cars cost more while being of poorer quality.

The country's interests? Or a country's special interest groups at the expense of the rest?

@oppionatedindividual8256 Or French companies could learn to innovate, cut costs, and offer better products instead of forcing European consumers to buy overpriced domestic crap.

@DarthAwar Tarrifs don't apply to military equipment. Governments are the only customers, so if they want more domestic military equipment, then they give the contracts to themselves.

@robertofernandez7773 Protectionism protects special interests over a country's overall economy. This is especially true as the EU and US aren't developing countries with infant industries and undeveloped infrastructure.
2
@robertofernandez7773 So, the entire EU would have to suffer economic stagnation to protect inefficient Italian apple farmers and French car manufacturers?

Competition is good. Shouldn't European goods be able to win the bigger American market without trade barriers interfering?

@dragonhero14 The user is named "JJFrance." I didn't think explaining how American exceptionalism would lead Europe to having cheaper, higher quality goods would be a good selling point.

Not really. The EU blocked every free trade negotiation until 2016 when Trump reversed American principles amd started doing the same.

It's hysterical that Europeans pretend they aren't poor.
1
That is a negative spin on taking risk on new innovations

There is no free trade deal with China. China is super protectionist.
