Why is the US still doing all the work on behalf of the freeloaders in Europe? At least, the UK and Poland are doing their fair share.

@3s0t3r1c Defense spending. The US taxpayers are footing the bill to protect Europe's interests, while they keep cutting military spending. Just look at how the US military had to mobilize in Syria stop ISIS from planning terrorist attacks against European cities. Now Russia is knocking on Europe's doorstep and the EU is still expecting the US to do all the heavy lifting. I could continue with multiple other examples.

@kenmurray4005 Estonia was a freeloader until 2014 with minimal contributions to NATO until Russia threatened them more directly. In fact, Estonia has very little to give Ukraine because their military spending on advance hardware is so recent.

@SimplyVanis They gave all their manpads because they had so few to give. The decades of freeloading resulted in an embarrassingly small stockpile of military equipment. I like point out the Western Europe is much, much worst.

@billy6pack887 Russia has half the territory they controlled six months ago. That hardly seems like winning. Ukraine is a democracy fighting against an authoritarian power with imperial ambitions. Seems like a good enough reason to support Ukraine in their defense.

@billy6pack887 I'm guessing they don't teach what a pyrrhic victory is in Russian military academies. Losing thousands of soldiers you can't spare on an offensive of a fortified position with little strategic value is not the smartest strategy. If wasn't for all the propaganda value, Ukrainians would probably retreat from Bakhmut to let the Russians throw themselves against the even more fortified cities of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. (Cities with actual strategic value unlike Bakhmut).

@billy6pack887 Obviously the Soviet tradition of treating young men as expendable continues. At least Stalin's Red Army had a cause worth fighting for in WW2. Putin is sending people to die over conspiracy theories of his own making.

@billy6pack887 Russia is not fighting for survival like WW2, so there is a limit to the people's willingness to sacrifice lives and treasure. Look at the limits on manpower. The pool for volunteers had dried up and the regime would be on shaky ground if another mobilization is called. Russia also has difficulty replacing their weapons due to a combination of dependence on Western imports and sanctions. On the low-tech end, they are spending more ammunition than they can possible replace. Meanwhile, Ukraine can source their weapons from the US, Europe, South Korea, and Japan.
