Let's see how they feel when they have to start paying federal income taxes.
8
@alexmelendez7016 Those are high local taxes to pay for a local government that is bloated with waste and corruption. The only federal income taxes the islanders have to pay is income sourced from the mainland.
8
Their economic and governmental mismanagement shows they can't choose leaders who can govern a state. Illinois should lose their statehood for the same reason.
5
PR should get statehood just so they have to pay federal income taxes like the rest of us. No more freeloading.
4
The Philippines is doing fine.
3
@dylanshaffer2184 False. They do get social security. They just don't qualify for Supplemental Security Income. Maybe read articles instead of just the headlines.
2
@mazinger101z States still have to deal with Federal BS.
2
@dylanshaffer2184 PR pay payroll taxes, while collecting Social Security, Medicare, and Unemployment. Meanwhile, they receive money from the federal government, while not paying any federal income taxes. As a state, the freeride will be over.

@bmer92k86 What about Washington DC?
1
@Calb_PR Those taxes aren't federal income taxes. Those are taxes to a bloated, local government that is somehow over a quarter of all the islands' jobs.
1
@Calb_PR That is a local tax to pay off the bloated local governments' out of control spending that was funded by out of control borrowing. That law was a partial bailout to avoid the island going into bankruptcy.
1
@bruceleeroy3561 Legally, you only have to pay federal income taxes if you are being paid from the mainland.
1
@andith A) FICA is a payroll tax and not a federal income tax. B) PR collects more Social Security money every year, then they pay into with Social Security payroll taxes C) You listed the smallest states in the Union and ignored how those states residence's have to pay federal income tax unlike Puerto Ricans. D) The federal income taxes they claim to pay are actually rich millionaires who claim residency in PR, but actually make their money from their businesses on the mainland. The rich millionaires don't get to dodge income taxes just by claiming to live in PR.
1
@snipersquat4758 False. They pay federal payroll taxes, but not federal income taxes.
1
@snipersquat4758 Under the law, Puerto Rican residents only pay federal income taxes if they are getting their paychecks from mainland sources. You lie over and over that they do pay federal income taxes, but it isn't true.
1
@snipersquat4758 Did you delete your comment after a basic Google search shows you have no idea what you are talking about?

If you think the politicians are corrupt now, then imagine when they are left in charge of corruption investigations of themselves instead of the FBI.
1
Homeless Guy The Jones Act is worst for Hawaii and Alaska who are much further out of the way from mainland ports. PR's issues are internal. They keep voting for the corrupt Democratic poltical machine that overly taxes the population and steal/wastes the taxpayer dollars. For example, why does the head of education in Puerto Rico make significantly more the Secretary of Education for the entire federal government? Why is more than 1 in 4 people employed on the island working for the government?
1
I say give them independence and let the Democrats fail on their own.
1
@jddII That doesn't even make sense as most of America is non white with states like Texas have a non white majority. Not everything is about race.
1
@jddII When is the last time you met a white supremacists? It is like Islamist terrorists where it only seems like they are everywhere, because the media likes to portray it that way because fear and outrage is how they get viewers.
1
@jddII Conspiratorial nonsense. Do you also think the Illuminati are trying to oppress minorities?
