I remember a lot of messed up kids in middle and high school where their actions weren't that different from the shooter, but there was never a school shooting. I imagine that schools deal with these issues more than you think. Remember, they are school administrators, not forensic psychologists. It may be unreasonable for you to use your 20/20 hindsight to say they should have saw this coming. The parents are a different story. They knew the kid was too messed up to have a gun.
