It’s deeper than that. I went “low-contact” with both of my parents in the last decade of their lives. Yes, they struggled to see me and relate to me outside of my family role. But the larger issue was that neither one of them had the strength of character to face the truth of their own behavior. Their defenses were so impenetrable that it was literally like dealing with two psychotics. We weren’t even operating in the same reality-system. So pleading ignorance, non-fault “apologies”, and outright gaslighting (that never happened) are how they defend their self-esteem. But it keeps you stuck in an insane system that is soul crushing.
