  1. It is possible to love someone but be unable to tolerate living with them. You have to get to a safe distance for your own mental health, but you don’t stop caring what happens to them.

But one of the markers of full maturity (imo) is when you stop seeing your parents as these superhuman beings who should have perfectly met your needs…. …and you start to see them as ordinary people who who did what they could with their human limitations and the knowledge and resources they had. They are still accountable for what they did or failed to do. But you stop feeling like they were able to perfectly meet your needs and just chose not to. You realize that in some ways they were an empty well who didn’t have it within them to nurture in certain ways. It means you stopped seeing them through the eyes of a child, and start to see them as another adult. It took me until I was age 38 to realize that I kept picking different versions of the same kind of woman, over and over again. So I’m not going to demand of someone else, what I wasn’t capable of myself at the time.
