  1. The Mississippi had a drought as well recently and Mississippi itself has had water shortages. Not exactly something exclusive to desert regions. By the way, there are countless different ways to get water. Powerful Saudi Arabia exists.

  2.  @StLouis-yu9iz  Not exactly. For one, the majority of California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho are not even desert. Even then, the deserts of the west are not that dry. The mountains produce enough moisture to have natural lakes, forests, and rivers. These are large areas too unlike other desert regions of the world like the Sahara, Arabian Peninsula, the Namib desert, or the Atacama. There is also the fact that not all of the west is even desert. The wettest places in the continental US that are wetter than any place east of the Mississippi span from Northern California to Washington. The source of the rains and snow feeds major rivers like the Sacramento and the Columbia rivers. Especially during winter when it strengthens and extends its influence across the whole west coast. It is how California has the most productive agricultural region in the entire world. The second thing is the Mississippi and Missouri rivers are heavily influenced by the west as it is the source of the Missouri. Hence, part of what contributed to its drying. Enough to even disrupt inland shipping, expose 100-year-old shipwrecks, and connect an island. The third thing is the weather is not entirely getting wetter or drier in every place. The west coast is getting drier, but it is having the rain and snow happen in shorter periods with a number in greater intensity. There are also more tropical influences on the weather happening which was why Southern California had an unusually wet summer that even flooded Death Valley. Stranding people. That same even also slightly helped the Colorado as well. With climate change, that will likely happen more. Resulting in potential hurricanes reaching California and influencing Arizona. The changes in weather patterns have also caused places in Texas and east of the Mississippi to have abnormally dry weather. Saudi Arabia will always be powerful as long as they have Mecca because of all the resources other countries will pour into ensuring its maintenance. Some of those countries are wet and powerful like Indonesia. Even then, that country has numerous mineral resources that are being exploited and they are expanding into other economic sectors fast. They do desalinization and also drilling. The ground has loads of freshwater. The grounds of Arizona and New Mexico are very rich in freshwater. Even then, there is a project proposal to connect the Salton Sea to the Gulf of California. The Salton Sea is extremely close to Arizona which can definitely achieve a connection for supply for de-Salinization. Arizona can also share some of that water as well with New Mexico and California and Nevada can probably set up more from an alternate route for Utah's proposal for getting salt water from the Pacific Ocean into the Great Salt Lake. Route going south of the Sierra Nevada rather than having it pumped over the huge Sierra Nevada while being closer to Arizona and New Mexico.

  4.  @StLouis-yu9iz  Depends on where you are in the west once again. There is more reliable rain in the Pacific Northwest than anywhere on the east coast and about the same averages along Northern California. For drought conditions, no. In some years, even San Diego, California and Gila Arizona have gotten more rainfall than regions of the Mid-West and central Appalachian areas in rain shadows. Gila is just standard for the west in precipitation averages along with San Diego being the driest place on the whole continental Pacific coast. Multiple ships were literally docked because of the drought and channeling had to be done along the Mississippi even as far south as Tennessee. Salt water had also contaminated the river due to the weakened flow in Louisiana and Mississippi. That is a drought that is definitely equal to or drier than drought conditions seen in various parts of the west. Even drought stricken Sacramento river remained navigable and the Columbia still had a reliable supply of water. That is not something an arid climate would support.

  5. ​ @hopsiepike  They use American irrigation, but not just that. Saudi Arabia has Mecca. That place has the support of countless people and religious authority powers who will give people's lives to protect it. They have economic giants like Indonesia who can also leverage trade with China (Indonesia also has more average precipitation than the US as a whole does). They have the backing of Pakistan who puts pressure on India militarily. They have giant mineral reserves that are very useable for green alternatives to oil.

  6.  @Catlily5  It is a big area. Though yet, the southwest isn't that dry. It has much more water than most other desert regions around the world. The other regions also have quite a few people and have sustain many people for thousands of years. People can absolutely make a living in the Southwest. The other thing is that completely drying isn't a guarantee due to waters in the Pacific nearby warming up as well along with the climate. Allowing for more potential tropical storms to reach the area.

  7.  @StLouis-yu9iz  I am not denying the aridity of most of the west. What I am denying is that it is extremely arid. Only places like the southern basin of the Colorado along the California and Arizona border are that level of dryness. The other areas which are the majority, actually have sustainable amounts of water. For the places of NorCal, OR, and WA, I included them due to their huge areas and I was not sure if you were only talking about AZ and NM or everywhere in the west. The cities like Phoeniz and Las Vegas are definitely screwed without the Colorado right now, but others like San Diego are not that dry. In fact, most of the cities in extreme arid places like Phoenix are actually developed near sources. Other cities that are not like Salt Lake City are not developed along those sources the same was because they already have some degree of those sources. There are also things with climate change that may not result in the whole region actually becoming drier due to tropical influences going farther north. For too many people, depends on how it is the places manage to get water. San Diego with its growing use of de-salinization can definitely expand. Some places in New Mexico can probably attain water supplies from intensifying summer storms and/or drilling. Any place can be stretched to its limits as demonstrated when a town in Mississippi ran out of water.

  8.  @Catlily5  The answer really depends on where in the west. Phoeniz and Vegas as of now, are very dependent on the Colorado river while others don't use the Colorado as much. There are also numerous different ways to get water resources like water aqueducts for various local and distant mountain areas that see summer storms or places farther north like Idaho and Montana. Same thing would extend for farmland with greater emphasis on the farmland being near water sources. Though yet, Arizona and New Mexico use livestock more. Making it probably more practical to simply have the farmland in California and the Pacific Northwest and then simply ship the produce to Arizona and New Mexico.
