That stick would probably be effective with good training where one moves it quickly and sly enough to pin them. For the man grabber itself, you could make the surface sticky(adhesive or some type of suction) and varied where it is difficult to grab and/or having wider extensions at the ends of the opening to increase the sap of area the person would have to grab. Making it more difficult or even too wide for then to grab. You could also but grabbing mechanisms small and big between and above and below the area where you could grab a hand with those parts or pin their arms and legs with the other ones above and them pin their body with the main grab.
