One of the things to remember about the RN - is the way it has historically, going back several hundred years - done so much with whatever the government deigned to spend on ships for it. As recently mentioned - this led to the happy crews assigned to the well made ships captured from the French and the Spanish. It's most recent aircraft carriers - were supposed to be able to be back fitted as CATOBAR ships - but - when it was decided near the end of their construction to actually do what the contractors had promised - the cost of tearing up what had already been done and replacing it with new equipment - was prohibitive and you now have two large ships that were fully capable of being REAL Aircraft Carriers that didn't need a ski ramp on the bow and the ability to land vertically for the aircraft that would operate from them ... The FAA misses their F-4 Phantoms. .
