Yeah. Those ship yards are something. I lived in a house at the mouth of the Portsmouth River and saw the Thresher launched. I went to school with kids whose fathers were on it when it sank. They had the sail of a Gato Class submarine there - which in 1958 was only a decade and a half or so from the end of WWII. When the movie Sink the Bismarck came out - it created a lot of interest locally - as the people there (my house was 100 yards from the Atlantic Ocean) were very much aware of all of that - when it was happening. About 200 yeards from my house was the concrete remains of a Disappearing Battery of Heavy Coastal Defense Guns. (This was my house) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6e/Portsmouth_nh_martello.jpg The Brick Martello Tower there was built by the Patriotic Ladies for the War of 1812 (it's nothing but rubble today). That gun battery would have been to the left of the tower and closer to where the picture was taken from. So - that was an interesting area in which to live, especially for an 8 year old boy. We had all kinds of ships going in and out of that river mouth every day. That and we had a sledding hill! That was a lot of fun in the winter. Out of all the places I lived while my Dad was in the Marines - that was the place that was the most fun. .
