The color picture of what is supposedly the final version of the design has only 3 screws. The North Carolina's had four. For the significance of this - see what happened to the Bismarck ... .

What ... unlike Warspite? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC4NJcFjqgQ and wasn't here one of the KG V's that rammed and sank one of it's escorts? The USN and RN were both large navies and as such - BOTH - had a number of incidents where they rammed or fired on their own ships. .

The significance of the torpedo damage is exaggerated. .

@danielsummey4144 Yes. It left a 30 foot gash but it shrugged it off. The ship increased speed to clear the area and that was that. The ship was never in any danger of being lost. The problem was that it did have to go in to have that gash repaired. I think the Saratoga got torpedoed 3 different times but it's Torpedo Defense System was good - and it survived them all - only having to go in to have the damage repaired. They just couldn't fix damage like that over night and it took it out of service for a while. The Wasp was much more vulnerable and was lost https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Wasp_(CV-7) .

@brucetucker4847 Yes - the avgas was a problem. One of the things they did - was to develop a system whereby the avgas distribution system would be filled with fire fighting foam in anticipation of an attack - but - if the avgas storage tanks were hit ... that could really cause a problem. One other factor here though - was that a number of the earl carrier losses were because of torpedoes. The carriers hit by kamikaze's had severe fire damage top side but their hulls were whole - and they survived. The other thing is - severely damaged ships like the Yorktown and Hornet were lost because the Japanese were able to get to them. Yorktown could have been saved but was torpedoed by a submarine and Hornet torpedoed by Japanese destroyers after they chased off the American Destroyers trying to sink her. Had the US not had to abandon the Hornet because they had lost the battle - she might have been saved. As it was (iirc) ideas to tow her were abandoned because the rest of the fleet could not stay to protect them and the likely result would have been the loss of the ship attempting the tow. The larger carriers hit by kamikaze's were all able to exit the battle area under their own power - though some of the smaller ones were lost. .
