Those Yorktowns were tough ships. CV-5 survived Coral Sea and would have survived Midway if a submarine hadn't gotten her. Hornet might have survived as well - if we had won that battle too (assuming an absence of Japanese submarines) - but as we had lost it we had the ignominy of having one of our carriers torpedoed and sunk by enemy destroyers. And of course Enterprise survived a number of hits. Good thing for the CV-8's reputation that she launched the Doolittle raid and was immortalized because of Torpedo 8. How much of that could be put at the door of being rushed into service I can't say. Maybe if she'd had more time to work up her crew and air group she'd have done better. Perhaps her air group commander would have been relieved ... .
