  2. Remember that JavaScript tries to hide the distinction between “integer” and “floating-point”, calling both just “number”. It would be a logical consequence of this to not overflow values that don’t fit within some limited integer range, if your intention is to hide the fact from your users that there are even such things as integers.

  4. Emacs is great on Linux. I keep it running all the time. I also have the following alias defined: alias e='emacsclient -n' That way, in any terminal window, I can type e «filename» to immediately open that file in the running Emacs.

  5. I had a look at the MDN page (probably the most readable description I could find), and apart from warning about non-numbers being implicitly coerced into numbers, it says nothing like this. There are situations where delays may last longer than expected, but they should never be shorter. So it seems like this is some kind of weird Chrome/Chromium bug.

  6. Given that you can cancel a scheduled timeout, why not allow infinity? Then you avoid special-casing the situation where “did I schedule a timeout, or didn’t I?”.

  16. vim is the only family of editors with separate commands for inserting text before the current position versus after the current position. Normal editors (including the GUI ones) do their insertion at the current position.

  17. A great environment for doing “scratchpad” programming is Jupyter. The notebook paradigm supports incremental cell execution with multiple lines of code per cell, and rich output with interactive GUI widgets as well. I have done several presentations using Jupyter notebooks, and they are also handy for publishing examples that users can not just passively view, but also actively interact with.
