It’s against US law for us furriners to try to influence their election. Fun fact.

@randomness8819 There was a wise man who lived a long time ago, and left us many lessons worth following. One of them was “the gods help those who help themselves”. He seems to be a bit out of fashion these days. His name was Aesop.

@randomness8819 No “blasphemy”, just fact. He was a real person, you know.

Part of the problem in the US is the inflexibility of the two-party system: if you’re not for one side, you’re automatically against them. Third parties don’t stand a chance; try voting for one, or even not bothering to vote at all, and you end up favouring the Republicans. Here in NZ we currently have five parties in Parliament, representing a broad range of political views. And three of them are actually part of the Government. Sounds unwieldy? It might be, except that everybody understands that politics is all about compromise. And so we manage to get things done--ideological posturing tends not to survive very long in our political climate. In the US, you have a Government shutdown every few years. When was the last time we had one in NZ? Never. And another part of the US problem is that slavery-era institution known as the Electoral College.

@maryrosekent8223 Seems like lobbyists have too much power in the US system. Even if there is popular sentiment for change, powerful forces can keep it from happening. Looks like every kind of manipulation is allowed, just short of being able to tie particular lobbying/campaign/funding dollars to particular votes: so long as that connection cannot be explicitly made, it’s not considered “corruption”. The system may not be entirely “corrupt”, but it is certainly lacking in transparency.
