  3. There’s the economic concept of an “externality” -- that is, a cost that a company is responsible for, but they don’t have to pay, because it’s somebody else’s problem. Like when they mess up the environment or poison people. This is why we have regulatory authorities, to ensure that a company very much bears liability, particularly financial liability, for the damage and hurt that it creates. Then hopefully it will think twice before creating new “externalities” in future.
