There are many levels on which community members can contribute. Code is good, documentation is also needed, as are tutorials, or simply participating on online discussion forums and helping out users with problems. Yes, and financial contributions can be helpful, too.

So where is there a non-Linux, non-sucky UI? Looking at the complaints every time Microsoft and Apple do something new, it seems like having a platform with a choice of UI is preferable to one where the UI is welded in.

Too many Free Software users still have what I call the “user of proprietary software” mentality. They see themselves as passive users of products like those from Microsoft or Apple, rather than members of an active community. Free Software lives and dies by the health of its community, of contributions back to the project, not by the sheer numbers of mere users. This is why Free Software does not need large “market share” in order to be successful. But it does need that community.
