  2. Emacs is not an IDE, it’s an editor. IDEs tie you into particular build systems, whereas Emacs is build-system-agnostic. Notice I said “editor”, not “text editor”. I have successfully used Emacs to edit binary files. That’s one benefit of a paradigm where a newline is just another character in the file, you don’t need special commands to navigate past them, or to edit them.
