But the only things packaged up in these snaps is major apps already available in distros anyway.

I don’t understand the point behind snap/flatpak/appimage etc. For some reason they feel that distro maintainers can’t do their job in keeping dependencies up to date, so upstream app vendors should take over this responsibility instead. All I have to say is, look at proprietary platforms like Microsoft and Apple, where there is no package management to speak of, so app vendors have to do exactly this: do you think they do a good job? No. Do you want to be like that? I don’t.

@littlepeon Ubuntu is not shipping Chrome. Chrome is closed-source from Google -- nobody else gets to make their own builds. Debian has probably the most professional procedure for managing dependencies. That’s why I can have thousands of packages installed on my Debian Unstable system, and have it work.

@littlepeon Those who can’t cope with Debian Unstable are free not to use it. If you prefer a Microsoft-friendly distro which is angling to be acquired by them in the near future, by all means stick with Ubuntu.
