The fact that real image sensors have to average the incoming light intensity over a nonzero area leads to a loss of contrast in the fine detail, as you get closer to the Nyquist limit. This is why you have a filter in image-manipulation programs that compensates for this effect. It’s called “Unsharp Mask” ... you may have heard of it.
