4:18 Fun fact: Imagination is what’s left of the company that used to own and license the MIPS architecture patents. As far as they’re concerned, that was yesterday’s business, and they have gone all in on RISC-V now.

@CnCDune Maybe time for you to start looking at non-proprietary alternatives? Because it’s clear Windows has passed its peak — it is getting more and more expensive for Microsoft to maintain, while returning less and less profit. Which is why Microsoft is resorting to tricks like inserting ads everywhere on the Windows desktop it can.

If you look in the Top500 supercomputer list, you will see machines based on IBM’s POWER architecture — another RISC-class system. Also China has its home-grown high-performance “Loongarch”, which some say is reminiscent of MIPS — also RISC.

@CnCDune Vintage Windows/DOS games tend to run better on Linux than on Windows. The high-end CAD apps originated on Unix systems, back in the day. Going to Linux would be like coming home for them.

@CnCDune There are open-source CAD programs that rival what’s available on Windows. Old 16-bit Windows software runs better on Linux than it does on current Windows.

RISC has dominated computing for over 30 years now. x86 is the only non-RISC architecture still in common use, and in terms of popularity, it’s only about number 3 or 4.
