2:42 That’s pronounced “mah-teh”. I think it comes from “yerba mate”.

Knoppix was designed as a “live CD”, to run off an optical disc without requiring installation. Used to be great for those wanting to try Linux out without messing with their hard drive. Not sure if it’s so unique in that regard nowadays.

Let me also mention SystemRescueCd -- this one isn’t really useful when installed to a hard drive (unless it’s an external one), but it is very handy when running off an optical disc or USB stick. You can use it to fix up problems with your drives or repartition them, moves files around etc. Can also read and write Windows NTFS volumes, for fixing Windows. (I was going to say “Windows problems”, then I realized I was repeating myself...)

I used to run Gentoo, but I found myself spending too much time rebuilding everything from source on every update. So I decided to switch to a distro with prebuilt binaries, but still reasonably cutting-edge. Currently this means Debian Unstable. And for a handful of things where even this is not cutting-edge enough (e.g. FFmpeg, Blender), I build those from source.

The difference has to do with the deskop environment. My Mint-using friends tell me that “Mate” is derived from GNOME 2, while “Cinnamon” is their own unique DE.
