I learned a new word today: “vatniki”. It comes from the word for a kind of warm jacket, but it refers to people who prefer to bask in the warm glow of not thinking about things, of having implicit trust in their leaders ... regardless of the consequences.

Call it the “Hollywood mentality”. Too many movies and TV shows have the guy with the biggest guns/bombs winning the argument. And then the story ends, as though there are no consequences afterwards.

If you remember, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine agreed to give up its nukes, leaving Russia as the sole nuclear-armed remnant of the original nation. In return, it got security guarantees from various parties, including Russia. Now we know how worthless those “guarantees”, from that one party at least, have turned out to be ...
17
If it were Ukrainian troops merrily marching along Russian territory, that would be a rather stark admission that the invasion has completely backfired, would it not?
11
Many in Russia itself remember Stalin fondly. Those elsewhere, not so much. Ask those in Ukraine what they remember about Stalin, and they will likely reply with one word: “Holodomor”.

Do you feel that Lukashenko’s position is already precarious, that if he drags your country into the war, that could be the tipping point to rouse people up to get rid of him?
6
You are fine in 🇺🇸 as long as you have your health. Once you get seriously sick, you’ve had it.
4
First he declares that they will always be part of Russia, then he runs away because the Ukrainian troops are getting just a little too close for comfort. Way to stoutly defend your own territorial integrity!
4
Putin is no longer making such a big noise about “denazification” any more ...
4
I wonder where in the 🇺🇸 Constitution it says that elections have to be free and fair, or that the judiciary must remain independent. In other words, where does it actually say that it is supposed to be a democracy under the rule of law?
3
I remember that picture of Yeltsin standing on the tank, when he and the others went to rescue Gorbachev from being detained by the coup plotters. He stood for freedom back then. Later, something changed.
3
Lenin lost an election and took power anyway. There are some nowadays who would wish to emulate him ...
3
The phrase is “deer caught in the headlights”.
3
“If I don’t steal your land, somebody else will.”

There are ways to hide VPN connections. The only way to block them completely is to block all connections completely.

The First World War was about rival empires, nothing more. Nothing about “fighting for freedom”, or “countering aggression”, just who wanted the most control over the world. The Second World War was about cleaning up the mess left by the First World War.
2
@lachdananx7686 So why did that cause all those countries to be dragged into a war?
2
@ruprectmorales To add to your list: Chile, getting a new Constitution after protests against the Pinochet-era one they’ve had until now.
2
There’s been quite a lot of unrest over the past few days over Putin’s callup. So not everyone in 🇷🇺 is a complete sheep.
2
Macdonalds has gone, but they still have Burger King!?
2
Maybe they were thinking “constitutional monarchy” after the manner of Charles I. Remember what happened to him ...
1
He actually misheard the question. He thought it was about “Yahtzee”, not “Nazi”. You won’t hear this on Mainstream Media, but I have it on good authority that 🇨🇦 is a hotbed of cheats and abusers of this noble game, who must be stopped!
1
Just a note that 🇺🇸 doesn’t score all that well according to the RSF press-freedom index.
1
That is absolutely true. Germany is possibly the classic example: the proportional-representation system was put in place to ensure that a dictator could never take power there again. Yet it’s not quite the same as the system in Britain. Certainly I feel it’s a system the US could learn from, especially in the light of current events.
1
@Solaire_au_Frohmage That’s what dictatorships, not democracies, are for.
1
@Solaire_au_Frohmage You are not trying to suggest that Germany, and other countries near the top of the Democracy Index, are actually “dictatorships”, are you?
1
There are certain definite characteristics underlying democracies, that preclude the domination of dictators. It’s inherent in the definition of “democracy”, after all.
1
@vijek6435 Feel free to point out to me the exact words that were used, that are supposed to mean what I said.
1
@vijek6435 “Good behaviour” according to whom? That’s not the same as saying they will act “impartially, without fear or favour”. And what about free and fair elections?
1
@vijek6435 That’s a pretty longwinded say of saying you don’t know ...
1
4:24 But you are not supposed to call it a “war”. It’s a “special military operation”.
1
There are some in Russia who remember the time of Stalin fondly. Ask Ukrainians what they think of Stalin, and they will likely answer with one word: “Holodomor”.
1
If the Government is afraid of the people, that’s a sign of a dictatorship.
1
Democracies need checks and balances, to try to guard against abuses of power. And they need to be secularly-based, with no special place for any religion or race or whatever. Watch out for those who claim to be “one nation under god”.
1
5:46 Split the difference logarithmically ... very perceptive.
1
7:40 Has he forgotten that Putin intervened in 🇸🇾 on behalf of President Bashar Al-Assad? So whom is he wanting to “denazify”?
1
T***p wanted to buy Greenland, didn’t he? That didn’t seem to go down well.
1
3:07 “The factories worked ... the plants worked” ... sort of. Queues, empty shop shelves, agricultural failures, inefficiently-run factories ... where keeping up appearances was more important than actual success. With exceptions, of course. The space program was an outstanding achievement ... until Korolev died.
1
I wonder if that applies to your comment as well ...
1
@lussdoru3108 If it “always depends”, then it has to be yes.
1
The US system is missing too many of the safeguards of democracy. For example, an independent Electoral Commission to draw boundaries and run elections. It doesn’t score very highly on press freedom. Also it helps if every vote counts equally, as in Germany. Talking of Germany, their system was brought in after World War II to ensure that a dictator could not take power there again. Maybe time for the US to give it a try?
1
3:02 I think 🇷🇺 is officially defined as a “hybrid” state, so he is right.
1
@contactluke80 That’s a couple of thousand arrests, the protests have been larger than that. And they are still ongoing.
1
In that case, India, with over 100 TV news channels, should be enjoying some of the most accurate reporting in the world. But it is not.
1
@namastezen3300 So how many news sources do you need, if those are not enough?
1
@namastezen3300 I notice you are moving away from your original claim about multiple news sources “compete to get the most accurate reporting”.
