@tadeuszmarin5704 From what I was told, “Windows CE” was not based on the Windows NT kernel at all--it was an entirely separate development, now abandoned. It was probably designed from the beginning to have very limited functionality anyway.

When you buy something that expensive, how much more would it add to the cost to think ahead, consider how long that hardware is likely to be in service, and extract some commitment from the vendor regarding reasonable levels of support over that duration of time?

But the FSF is already willing to accept non-copyleft licences as fitting within their definition of “Free”. If that isn’t already “ruinous compromise”, then what is?

If you impose field-of-use restrictions, then it’s no longer free/open source.

The whole “Secure Boot” concept turns out to be a complete waste of time. When security holes are discovered in signed binaries (e.g. the Kaspersky one), they are supposed to go on a revocation list so that Windows PCs will no longer run those binaries. But it turns out Microsoft cannot actually issue such revocations, because those compromised binaries are in such widespread use that it would render large swathes of the entire Windows installed base unusable. Which would likely lead to a murderous customer mob storming the Redmond Bastille ...

What kind of GUI architecture does Plan 9 support?

@splitprissm9339 Forwarding whole sessions is exactly what you normally need.

7:41 I would put “exec” in front of those command invocations. Just to save a process slot.

@altrogeruvah Did you support it?
1
@altrogeruvah Maybe it failed for lack of support.

There’s already one or two Raspberry π competitors based on RISC-V, which are very close to it in both price and performance. There’s your “desktop”. Or perhaps more correctly in terms of functionality, your “workstation”.

@mgord9518 Why, do they tend to maintain their value? Or maybe they deprecate them instead?
1
It’s actually a misspelling of a very old word: “N’Gome”, which means “Can’t figure out KDE”.
