  1. New distros get created for many reasons. Consider how Raspbian came about: when the first model of Raspberry π came out, it could run regular Debian, but was a bit of an odd fish because while it had hardware floating point, the core ARM instruction set was an older version, and there was no Debian build optimized for this combination--the one for the older ARM instruction set made no use of hardware floating point. So a couple of guys took it upon themselves to rebuild the whole of Debian just for the π. It had to be done on the π itself, and the bulk of it was done in six weeks.

  2. 1:00 Interesting to see one of their advertisers was 3CX. They sell a proprietary PBX product which I think was originally Windows-only. They now advertise it for Linux as well. I suspect they were forced into that because their business has been severely undercut by Free Software offerings based on Asterisk and the like.

  3. Talking of 3CX ... have you heard that somebody got into their build systems over a week ago and compromised the distribution of a desktop client app of theirs by bundling malware into it. An antimalware product was sounding the alarm all this time, but it took this long for the company itself to admit it had been pwned. And its arrogance goes as far as banning people from its support forums who have been getting upset over its tardiness in dealing with this.

  5. I remember, back when I did an Ubuntu install, turning it into Kubuntu was as easy as “apt-get install kubuntu-desktop”.

  7. If you think your point is not being addressed by any existing distros, feel free to start your own.
